Alpine Stromberg Air Cleaner Replacement
By Budd Bennion, Seattle
I could not find NOS replacement air cleaners for the Strombergs on my 1725cc Alpine so I went looking for something after market that would come close. What I found was a WIX 42032 air cleaner.

Cut the original air cleaners in half. Cut through the paper filter. You can cut through the wire mesh on the inside but there is no reason as you can, after you pull the two half's apart, just pull out the mesh. Do not cut the two sleeves that the two bolts go through as they will fall out when you separate the top from the bottom. No need to be to careful here as you will throw away the paper and mesh.
Take out all of the paper and glue. On one air cleaner I had to chip glue out and then use lacquer thinner to clean out the remaining residue. On the other as I grabbed the paper and glued section it all came out as one piece.

The new WIX 42032 air cleaner is 5/16" smaller in diameter and 1/2" taller. So you will have to get longer bolts to remount the air cleaner and center the filter. The sleeves for the bolts with 1/2"OD copper tubing as this is the same size as what came out but they will have to be approximately 1/2 longer. I glued (JB Weld) one end of this tube to make it easier to assemble. Also I had to get a longer piece of rubber hose for the connection to the valve cover breather as now the top of the air cleaners are farther away from the engine.
